Randy Groves began his career as an artist while at Wilfrid Laurier University. He began as a woodcarver as he had always enjoyed the touch and smell of cut wood.
All the pieces were carved using hand tools only and following traditional methods. Rotary carving tools were not used as Groves prefers to "feel" the wood as it takes shape. The subjects were all carved from a single piece of wood, generally Butternut as, although it is a relatively soft wood, it has the grain and appearance of hardwood.
A blend of finishes was used to protect the piece from fading or drying out. This also served to give the completed piece a soft, satin appearance that added to the aesthetic appeal of the work. Although the same subject may appear in a different carving from time to time, the exact piece is never duplicated allowing the collector to enjoy a truly one of a kind piece.
